Things to do with kids in Greenwich
Greenwich might be the single most rewarding half-day out in London for families with young kids. The park, the Maritime Museum, and the Cutty Sark all sit within a short walk of each other, everything is free or nearly free, and the sense of history is vivid enough that even a 3-year-old can feel it. Straddling the Prime Meridian line outside the Observatory is one of those small moments that kids remember for years.
What makes Greenwich particularly good for families is the way the activities stack without any dead time between them. Walk up the hill for the view, coast down to the playground and the deer enclosure, cut through to the Maritime Museum for the AHOY! gallery, and finish with ice cream by the Cutty Sark. For a slightly different day, Thames Barrier Park and Oxleas Wood add real variety and get you well off the tourist circuit.
The AHOY! gallery for under-7s is one of the best free children's exhibits in London: kids can load cargo onto a ship, steer through a simulated storm, and sail to faraway places. Combine with the park and the Cutty Sark for a full Greenwich day.
The view from the top of Greenwich Park, with the city spread out below you, is one of the best free things in London. Kids love straddling the Prime Meridian line outside the Observatory, then you can coast downhill to the playground and finish with the Maritime Museum.
Ancient woodland at the edge of south-east London with excellent paths through mature trees and a triangular 18th-century castle tower at the summit with views across three counties. A proper woodland adventure for kids who can manage some uphill walking.
Very underrated. The sunken garden is brilliant for exploration and feels genuinely other-worldly, and the view of the Thames Barrier itself, all silver domes and geometric precision, fascinates children who have never seen anything quite like it.
