Things to do with kids on the South Bank

The South Bank is one of those stretches of London that works surprisingly well for families, particularly if you avoid peak weekend afternoons. The riverside walk from Waterloo to London Bridge is completely flat and buggy-friendly, the Southbank Centre runs free events throughout the year that are genuinely good rather than an afterthought, and combining Tate Modern with a Thames Clipper ride back from London Bridge is one of those days that costs almost nothing and produces memories that stick.

The Unicorn Theatre near London Bridge is the area's hidden gem for under-7s: a professional theatre that exists entirely for young audiences, with shows ranging from babies to teenagers. Book well in advance. The Sky Garden is an excellent addition to any South Bank day: it is free, the views are spectacular, and kids find the whole experience of being 35 floors up in a garden genuinely exciting.
