Things to do with kids in Richmond

Richmond is where London remembers it is also the countryside. The park has wild deer wandering between ancient oaks, Kew Gardens has a treetop walkway that feels genuinely adventurous, and the WWT Wetland Centre manages to feel like a proper nature reserve despite being in Zone 2. For families who want the city but also want space, this corner of south-west London is hard to beat at any time of year.

The honest caveat for under-3s is that some of this territory works better once kids can walk properly: Richmond Park is large and the paths can be uneven, and Kew is a full day rather than a half-day. Hampton Court is probably best saved for when the kids can appreciate the maze and the history, which realistically means 4 years old and up. Everything else is excellent from the pram stage.

Richmond Park

Nowhere in London quite prepares you for the scale of Richmond Park: wild deer wandering alongside cyclists and families, ancient oaks, and a real sense of being far outside the city. The Isabella Plantation in spring is extraordinary, and Pembroke Lodge has a good playground and views all the way to the North Downs.

Tip: Isabella Plantation in spring is spectacular with azaleas. Drive to Pembroke Lodge for the playground.

Kew Gardens

The treetop walkway is the thing kids talk about afterwards, that vertiginous wobble through the canopy feels properly adventurous. The Princess of Wales Conservatory has a genuine jungle atmosphere, and the seasonal trails are well designed for under-7s.

Tip: The Treetop Walkway is free with entry and kids love it. The play areas are spread out so plan your route.

WWT London Wetland Centre

A genuine nature reserve in Zone 2, which still feels unlikely every time. Kids who are into animals get a lot from the otter enclosure and the pond-dipping sessions; kids who just want to run get the trails and the playground. Worth the entrance fee.

Tip: Bring binoculars for the bird hides. The adventure playground is surprisingly good. Otter feeding at 2pm daily.

Indoor and outdoor pools with dedicated kids' sessions and a warm teaching pool. The outdoor pool is heated and open year-round, which makes it one of the more dependable swimming options in this part of London whatever the weather.

Tip: The outdoor pool is heated all year but unbeatable in summer. Teaching pool is lovely and warm for babies.
