Things to do with kids in Hackney
Hackney earns its reputation as one of London's best neighbourhoods for young families. Victoria Park is genuinely one of the finest parks in the city, Hackney City Farm is free and reliably brilliant, and there is enough going on between Mare Street and Broadway Market to fill a full weekend without ever getting on the Tube. The East End's gritty charm works surprisingly well for kids: low pretension, lots of outdoor space, and a culture of actually turning up and doing things.
For under-5s the combination of the farm, the lido, and the Discover Centre in neighbouring Stratford gives you a proper circuit to rotate through across the seasons. The canal towpath from London Fields to Victoria Park is flat, buggy-friendly, and entirely traffic-free, which makes it one of those rare London walks where you can actually relax rather than referee the whole thing.
The East End's favourite park earns its reputation week after week: two solid playgrounds (the east one is better for toddlers), a seasonal splash pad, and a boating lake that feels like a genuine treat. Flat, buggy-friendly, and never boring.
One of London's best city farms, partly because of the animals and partly because of Frizzante, the Italian cafe attached to it, which does genuinely excellent food for parents. Free to enter, and the donkeys and goats are reliably happy to be visited.
Lovely Italian cafe inside Hackney City Farm. Great food for parents, kids can see the animals before or after eating. Weekend brunch is excellent and the outdoor tables in the farm courtyard are particularly lovely in summer.
Beautiful 50m heated outdoor pool in Hackney, open year-round. The fact that it is heated makes it viable across all seasons, and the atmosphere on a warm summer morning is genuinely lovely. Family swim sessions are popular.
Small but deeply immersive, this Stratford storytelling space changes its trail regularly so return visits feel fresh. The story builder activity is brilliant for 3-7 year olds who like making things up, and the whole place runs at a reassuringly unhurried pace.
Cosy farm near Brick Lane with donkeys, goats, sheep, and a lovely garden. Free and peaceful, perfect for toddlers who might find bigger farms a bit overwhelming. Easy to combine with Brick Lane for lunch.
