Things to do with kids in Battersea

Battersea has quietly become one of the better family destinations in south London. The park is large, flat, and packed with things to do, the zoo is small enough not to overwhelm a toddler but interesting enough to genuinely hold their attention, and the Power Station development has added a penguin colony that gives you an excuse to explore the riverside. The combination of park, zoo, and arts centre within walking distance of each other makes this an unusually complete day-out neighbourhood.

Go Ape is best held in reserve for when kids are 4 or older and can manage the Tree Top Junior course independently, which turns it from a stressful experience into an exhilarating one. The Battersea Arts Centre does family shows that are consistently worth the trip: immersive, well-made, and with none of the condescending quality that often creeps into children's theatre.

Small enough not to overwhelm a toddler, but with enough going on to feel genuinely exciting: meerkats, otters, lemurs, and a proper farmyard all within a compact, manageable space. Check the feeding schedule when you arrive and build the day around it.

Tip: The lemur feeding sessions are brilliant. Check the daily schedule on arrival.

Macaroni Penguin at Battersea Power Station
Free

Free to view, the penguin colony at Battersea Power Station is one of London's more unlikely attractions and kids absolutely love it. The penguins come out for feeding twice daily. A good excuse to explore the Power Station and walk along the riverside Thames path.

Tip: Book online in advance as walk-in spaces fill up quickly. Combine with a walk along the Thames path.

Their family shows are often immersive: kids might walk through the building, interact with performers, or solve puzzles. The BAC is housed in the old Battersea Town Hall, which gives even the building an atmosphere of something extraordinary about to happen.

Tip: Family shows are often immersive. Much more engaging than sitting in rows.
